DENVER (KDVR) — After another year of missing the playoffs, the Denver Broncos are looking to fill some positions with new blood.
Among those changes for next season, Russell Wilson’s time with the Broncos is in question.
With the draft coming up in April, the Broncos hold the 12th overall pick, the first time they are slated to make a first-round pick since 2021. Positions of need include running back, wide receiver, defensive line, cornerback – and quarterback.
Based on a recent interview with head coach Sean Payton, a new quarterback for the Denver Broncos isn’t inevitable, but it’s certainly not out of the question.
On Friday, Payton joined Kay Adams on the Up & Adams Show where the duo discussed Wilson’s time on the team.
Adams asked Payton the million-dollar question: How does it end?
“It used to be in our league where there was no free agency, you would have a draft, three rookies would beat out three veterans and you took the same team to the regular season that you had before. Except it’s much different now,” said Payton.
Payton continues, “This idea of ‘we’re going to pick up where we left off’ that’s all B.S, that’s not the case.”
As for how that impacts Wilson, it’s not quite clear yet.
The 10-hour draft meetings for next season’s team started on Monday, and Payton said he can’t name the jersey numbers of the rookie quarterbacks just yet as he hasn’t seen them.
In the meetings, the Broncos will be asking, “Are we going to be able to find it in the draft? Are we going to find it in free agency? Or is it in the building?” said Payton in the interview.
Decisions on Wilson coming soon
The decision won’t take much longer. When it comes to Wilson’s stay on the team, a decision will happen sooner rather than later, according to Payton.
Most likely, Denver will know within the next month.
The Broncos have a five-day gap, starting March 12, to officially decide whether or not they’re keeping Wilson.
The Broncos are already on the hook for Wilson’s $39 million salary for 2024, if he is on the roster beyond March 17 they will be responsible for his $37 million salary for the 2025 season.
As for now, Payton says he’s still looking for the “perfect marriage” when it comes to the quarterback for the Broncos.
“I think that’s still unsolved for us,” Payton said in the interview.
