Man dead following officer-involved shooting in DTLA

A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Downtown Los Angeles.

The LAPD says they received a call about a male suspect, who was possibly under the influence, with a stick threatening employees at a business in the area of 7th Street and Towne Ave. around 2:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Authorities say that when they arrived, a confrontation ensued with the suspect. The LAPD says less lethal munition was deployed to subdue the subject.

The LAPD wouldn’t release any more details about the sequence of the events following the deployment of the less lethal munition but did confirm that an officer-involved shooting did occur.

“The suspect was struck by gunfire and L.A. City Fire Department paramedics responded and transported the suspect to a local hospital,” said Lt. Letisia Ruiz for the Media Division with the LAPD told KTLA 5. “The suspect succumbed to his injuries.”

The deceased is described as a white male in his 30s or 40s. One officer on the scene was injured with a laceration on his hand and received treatment on the scene.

KTLA 5 asked Lt. Ruiz if the deceased could cause serious harm with a stick.

“Any object can cause harm,” Lt. Ruiz said. “Depending on how it’s used.”

No further details have been released as the LAPD is continuing the investigation. The area has been blocked off and authorities say they expect to be on the scene for several hours.

Any witnesses are asked to call the LAPD at 213-486-5910.
