DEC: Man trapped, painted squirrels red to track them

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A Putnam County man was ticketed after allegedly trapping and painting squirrels red to “keep track of those returning to his yard and causing his dogs to bark.” According to the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), this follows a series of “squirrel-painting” incidents in the Town of Patterson dating back to December 2023.

A man on probation was suspected of painting the squirrels and releasing them to a nearby park. Environmental Conservation Police conducted surveillance in the area and saw a bright red squirrel crossing the street less than a block away from the man’s home.
